Timeline of Art History

This is a very helpful site that features timelines of important events in art history as well as essays on important artists or artworks.  The variety of timelines is very helpful in that the timelines are organized by periods as well as regions.  Not only are the timelines very helpful in learning how art has an influence on later works, this site has images of the works so that you can see the influences.

 

NGA (National Gallery of Art) Kids

NGA Kids is an excellent site for both art teachers and art students.  The site is designed for younger grades, but can be fun and educational for students of any age.  In the “Art Zone” a student can make art based on a famous artist.  This helps them to really learn and remember what style of work an artist does.  There are also other games that are based on, or that include famous artworks.  This interactive site is a great place for kids to learn in a fun way about art history.

 

Art Explorer

Art Explorer is a site put out by the Art Institute of Chicago, and is an excellent source of quality impressionism and postimpressionism images as well as reliable information.  This site has very detailed and thorough analyses of great impressionist paintings and short yet enlightening artist biographies.  The search also helps in that it provides images, analyses, and biographies with one simple search.  The analyses are very helpful in aiding students to understand what the artist was dealing with through the work, and how the work fits into the large scale of art history.

 

Art Access

Art Access is an excellent source of information regarding specific paintings.  The paintings are organized and easy to find under headings of the art movements.  Each painting has a detailed and very informational analysis that includes the historical context as well as content.  It also gives the reader a bit of information about the artist, and where the painting is located today.  Any terms that the reader might not understand are linked to a definition, so that the reader can get the most out of the analysis.

 

NGA (National Gallery of Art) Classroom

NGA Classroom is also a wonderfully helpful site for art students and art teachers.  It has a search for online resources from the museum’s library.  Along with these resources are curriculum aids for art teachers.  NGA Classroom also has many interactive art related activities for students of all ages.  This site is very useful because it provides a variety of trustworthy and effective teaching aids.  The lesson plans are very thorough, and provide excellent suggestions that any teacher can use.

 

Explore Art

Explore Art is a site which provides an efficient and competent search for the many well known artworks that are located in The Getty Museum.  It provides detailed biographies of the artists as well as excellent images of the artworks.  In-depth analyses of each of the pieces of art in the museum are also featured on this site.  They provide excellent information formal qualities as well as the historical context of the famous pieces.

 

The Louvre

The Louvre is an excellent resource for one who wants to know more about historic art.  In the “A Closer Look” section of the site, one can not only read, but also hear about the history as well as the form and content of the many famous artworks that are now in The Louvre.  It is particularly helpful in that it gives the form, content, and context of the work, and it relates it to similar artworks from the same time period or culture.

 

Artforum Magazine

Artforum magazine’s website is an excellent source of information on what is happening in the art world right now.  Students can learn not only how artists today are working through reviews of current shows, but also how the work that is created today is related to artworks from previous time periods.  Artforum assists students in becoming a part of the current art world, and in discovering what issues artists today are dealing with.

 

Science, Art, and Technology

Science, art, and technology is a very educational site that explores the relation between art and several different areas in the field of science.  There is a short explanation of each accompanied by a short video from a lecture on the subject as well as notes on the lecture and a list of related books that can be used for further research.  The relations between chemistry and the appearance of colors is one example of the interesting topics that are explored on this site.

 

Cleopatra

Cleopatra is a site that is an audio and visual exploration of the ancient worlds.  Egypt, Italy and Greece are the three main ancient cultures that are investigated.  Under each culture, there are sub groups of different architectural and artistic elements of the culture and each of those are explained in more detail through pictures and audio.  The historical context is especially explored and explained very thoroughly.  This is an excellent site for exploring the history and the myths behind specific ancient artworks.

 

Chicago: The City in Art

Chicago: The City in Art is an excellent resource for teaching students about public art.  The site was created in conjunction with many Chicago area schools, and features the restored murals that are in those various schools.  The site provides a brief history of the piece, and a formal evaluation as well as connections to other artists and artworks that have something in common with the mural.  It also includes discussion questions which can be very helpful in helping students to learn how to analyze art.
